Significance of output:

The innovation of this paper in the field of bioinspiration and biomimetics is that it provides a two-way link between engineering and evolutionary ecology (the one-way link is well established, i.e. using nature to inspire design). For the first time a numerical model is developed to describe a unique form of locomotion (climbing without use of modified paired fins) by a fish. The approach not only provides a useful perspective for improving the design of snake-like and climbing robots, but sheds light on the extent to which adaptation of form deviates from perfection due to competing functional demands.
