Significance of output:

This paper is the last in a series of four publications resulting from a 3-year research program ($927,981) in collaboration with the US Air Force Office of Scientific Research. The modelling and control results presented demonstrate the potential of membrane mirrors to replace rigid mirrors in space-based telescopes. Membrane mirrors are light and thus using them immediately translates into lower launching costs. The model and control technique presented show their capabilities for forming an adaptive optic system which can correct for optic aberrations up to the third order.
