Significance of output:

Strut-and-tie models are an alternative design method for the shear design of reinforced concrete elements such as deep beams and pile caps. In the case of pile caps, there has been relatively little guidance on their use however, and this paper addresses this gap by making specific recommendations on the application of the strut-and-tie method to these structures. This paper is a culmination of a research programme on the shear behaviour of pile caps suggested by Dr Paul Jackson of Ramboll, who is UK representative on the Eurocode 2 drafting committee and to whom the findings have been communicated.
