Significance of output:

“Genie” (NER/T/S/2002/00217; NE/C515904) is a multi-million pound interdisciplinary project involving engineers, climate scientists, and computer scientists. Our optimisation tools and distributed computing computational techniques were developed with £5M+ from EPSRC (GR/R67705/01) and Industry (Rolls-Royce, BAE Systems, Airbus, Microsoft, and Fluent). These enhanced techniques- beyond our submission to 4th IPCC Climate Change (WG1) report- enabled accurate exploitation of larger statistical ensembles for tuning and studying complex climate models and to better inform the public debate on assessment and impact of future climate events. Further funding followed from Microsoft and EPSRC to develop Cloud-based computing for e.g. space debris modelling (EP/I034009/1).
