Kreider + O’Leary make performance, installation and time-based media work in relation to sites of architectural and cultural interest (http://www.kreider-oleary.net). Gorchakov’s Wish culminates Kreider + O’Leary’s engagement with the final three scenes of Andrei Tarkovsky’s Nostalghia (1983). The aim is to explore the specific relationship between Tarkovsky’s ‘film image’ and place. How do we relate to place through the poetic image, rendered filmically? What are the imaginative, cognitive and emotional possibilities that ensue? How might this help constitute a meaningful, and ethical, relation to place? Their objective is to pursue and embody this exploration through a combined visual-spatial-poetic practice.
The research has two outcomes, both in Gorchakov’s Wish (Unnameable Press, 2013). The first is tripartite video piece combinding video footage shot in Italy at the original filmic locations for Nostalghia with footage shot in-studio at the Centre for Creative Collaboration in London. The latter of these, a performance for video, translates Tarkovksy’s ‘original’ film image through a composite of word, image, object and action, as performed on a set specifically designed and constructed for each shot. The second output is a tripartite piece of creative writing that reads, paradoxically, as both score for the video performance and documentaiton of the project overall. Each part has a unique semiotics, different subject position and ‘voice’. All engage with Tarkovksy’s ‘original’ film and locations, whilst reconfiguring these to expose the meaningful and ethical potential of a relation between poetic image and worldly place. Gorchakov’s Wish reads in tandem with Kreider + O’Leary’s scholarly research into Tarkovsky’s film image: 'Time, Place and Empathy : The Poetics and Phenomenology of Andrei Tarkovsky's Film Image' in Journal of Visual Studies , Vol. 28, No. 1, 03.2013, p. 1-16.
