Significance of output:

Particle shape has a major influence on the mechanical behaviour (strength and compressibility) of granular materials, and is therefore important in fields such as geomechanics, sedimentology and oceanography, and chemical and process engineering. To date there has been no practical method for measuring form (sphericity), one of the three major components of shape. This paper describes the result of a collaboration between civil engineering and oceanography at Southampton that, for the first time presents a practical methodology for calculating the form of coarse-grained sediments.
