Significance of output:

This paper clarifies the importance root hairs in the uptake of nutrients such as phosphate by plants. Worldwide rock phosphate resources are predicted to run out within next 50-100 years with most of the existing stock in Morocco and China. The paper suggests new strategies for increasing the efficiency of use of phosphate fertilizers. This paper led to Defra BBSRC LINK funded research in partnership with the UKs largest agricultural consultancy ADAS to underpin future government (ie Defra) P-management policy.
