Significance of output:

Photonic devices have diverse applications e.g. fibre optic communications, solar cells, and displays. By enhancing techniques which we originally developed for work with companies such as Rolls-Royce, we developed new geometrical structures exhibiting highly-desirable properties which enable fine-tuning or filtering of incoming optical signals. This work was funded by a Royal Academy of Engineering research fellowship, Microsoft and EPSRC (GR/R67705/01, EP/I034009/1). Tools and methodologies used in the paper were exploited in a spin-out company, dezineforce, delivering cloud-based engineering services. dezineforce’s IP assets were sold to Microsoft’s HPC/Cloud team in 2011 with staff migrating into a number of international Microsoft roles.
