CD recording of Brazilian music for cello including works by Guarnieri

The Brazilian Cello represents the results of an extensive research project to discover, study and world premiere compositions by Brazilian composers from the 19th and the 20th centuries. It pays homage to the nationalist composer Camargo Guarnieri (1907-1993) by presenting his complete works for cello and piano. The objectives of this project were to produce both an innovative recording in terms of repertory; and a project of historical and documentary significance to mark and celebrate an era of Brazil’s cultural independence.

The Week of Modern Art of 1922 in Brazil represented a new "declaration of independence" for Brazilian culture and a successful break from an outmoded artistic heritage. Six years after the Week of 22, Guarnieri met Mario de Andrade (a central figure in the Week of 22), who was stunned by the degree of national consciousness of his work. Guarneri went on to become the most celebrated composer in the country.

The archives of the University of Sao Paulo were mined and Guarnieri’s family contacted to obtain manuscripts, unpublished pieces and scores for the 19th -century composers, as well as Guarnieri’s complete works. Interviews were carried out with people who knew Guarnieri to gather information about the cello in his compositional life and to understand his particular style. Analysis of all the pieces were carried out in collaboration with musicologist Cristina Capparelli from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil, who studied with Guarnieri and recorded all his piano compositions. Several performances followed to obtain feedback prior to recording.

The CD label Meridian Records has worldwide distribution. The performers have also presented a series of lecture recitals at home and abroad. A paper is currently being prepared for publication.
