Professor Wells is Consultant Physician in Respiratory Medicine employed by Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Foundation Trust, and Professor in Respiratory Medicine at the College's National Heart and Lung Institute (NHLI) as Head of the Interstitial Lung Disease research group.
Professor Well's academic research takes place at Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Foundation Trust and Imperial College only. His research publications are affiliated to Imperial as highlighted on his nominated publications. He has held 4 Imperial grants as principal investigator during the REF period.

Dr Wharton is responsible for developing, managing and sustaining the Pulmonary Hypertension Biobank at Imperial College. He manages an electronic database (known as TRIPHIC - Translational Research in Pulmonary Hypertension at Imperial College), which provides pseudonymised patient data for research purposes.
Dr Wharton's research takes place only at Imperial College and he has published more than 20 articles during the REF period, all affiliated to Imperial. He has supervised 2 Imperial research students (PhD & MRes) and was co-supervisor for a further PhD student. He works directly with 3 BHF/Wellcome Trust Clinical Fellows (undertaking PhDs with Professor Wilkins) and an Imperial College Junior Research Fellow, having jointly supervised his PhD.
