Additional information
This interdisciplinary work on fire dynamics and structural engineering was funded by a EPSRC/BRE CASE Award (SmithDA@bre.co.uk) with Arup (Angus.Law, email available). It generated a step change in the design approach used in structural fire engineering, enabling the effective fire safety design of large, open-plan structures. The results have been applied on six projects by Arup (e.g. Ludgate Hill, Victoria Circle, Lime Street). The paper won the Lloyd’s Science of Risk in Technology Prize for 2011 and Law’s resulting thesis was awarded the triennial best PhD prize at the International Association of Fire Safety Science (2011, USA).
