The first author edited the special issue of the BEE on effects of the earthquake on L’Aquila building stock. This paper, included in the SI, correlates observation of damage on buildings within the historic centre, with analytical vulnerability assessment based on mechanism approach. The outcome of this research has contributed to review recommended analysis approaches for masonry buildings in the Italian seismic code, has prompted key-notes presentations at the Italian National Seismic Conference and at UK Society for Earthquake and Civil Engineering Dynamics seminar in 2011. It was used as reference for the GEM (Global Earthquake Model) consequence database.
