Additional information

This paper presents the findings of a research project, which to date is the only experimental evidence available, regarding strength in shear reinforced concrete beams in which the type of aggregate is changed systematically. The work received the international recognition “fib Achievement Award for Young Engineers 2011” (research category). This interest reflects the large concern amongst structural engineers and infrastructure bodies regarding the structural safety of many bridges after recent failures due to shear. The work also sheds light onto the contribution of aggregate interlock which will help to re-assess existing and future design expressions for shear.
