Additional information

Prediction of turbine rim seal ingestion is a long-standing problem in turbomachinery design. This paper describes the first application in the literature of Large Eddy Simulation to this problem demonstrating a significant improvement in predictive capability for an engine representative geometry. Further results were presented in an invited paper in the Journal for Progress in Aerospace Science. Rolls-Royce have provided an EPSRC/Industrial CASE award to continue this work by validating it on a real engine case study. Validation of this technology will enable design of engines with significant improvements in fuel efficiency and emissions. (Rolls-Royce contact: Peter.Smout@rolls-royce.com)
