The paper presents the first consistent spatial discretisation of material boundaries at locations which are fractions of the discretisation length. This powerful approach greatly reduces computational costs and modelling errors. It has been applied to stochastic problems where the sensitivity of the response to uncertainties around the nominal position of boundaries needs to be investigated.
