Additional information

This output is a scholarly, critical performing edition of Giovanni Battista Vitali’s _Sonate a due, trè, quattro, e cinque stromenti_, Op. 5. The collection contains instrumental sonatas for stringed instruments and organ continuo in a variety of combinations, and was published in three instalments by UK publisher Edition HH, each reflecting a specific combination. The edition is based on two surviving prints (first edition, 1669 and second edition, 1674) held in the Museo internazionale e biblioteca della musica di Bologna, with reference to other 17th-century manuscript sources. This is the first such complete edition of Vitali’s Op. 5. Preparation work involved transcribing the music from the original part books of both printed sources, and critically appraising these in relation to the manuscript sources. As a critical edition, a biography of Vitali, musical commentary and critical notes are presented. As a performing edition, both score and parts were prepared for publication; original figured bass was preserved and complemented with editorial additions according to modern practice; amendments to key signatures, accidentals and rhythmic inconsistencies were made and noted in the commentary, as per standard scholarly practice. Suggestions to the reader/performer on appropriate performance practice are included.
