Additional information

This group, all classed as 'masques' despite their formal variety, includes complete and independent texts of both versions of the longest masque, 'Gypsies Metamorphosed' (total 4335 lines). All texts were edited afresh, with new base texts established, and a modernised text with annotations to the same level as those provided for the plays and poems. The research, in particular, re-examined the different and complex textual problems of the masques across print and manuscript. Working in chronological clusters (e.g. 'Gypsies' and 'News' in 1621) helped to highlight the significance of these works and their interconnections with the rest of Jonson's writings.
