The paper identifies the absence of supporting evidence for detailing of staggered lap joints the European (Eurocode 2) Design Code for concrete structures. It is demonstrated that the conventional assumptions on the benefit of staggered laps are unfounded. The conclusions from the paper have been incorporated into the fib Model Code 2010 (http://www.fib-international.org/model-code-2010-final-draft-volume-1). It is expected the findings will result in modifications to EC2.
