Additional information

This article was written with the contribution from Dr Mark Childs (an e-learning expert at Coventry University). Here, we argue that the notion of immediacy is integrated within modern theatre practices in the context of digital reality. We revisited the act of remediation, which is largely taken for granted by contemporary audiences and sometimes artists, focusing on the relationship between media evolution and new developments in scenographic practice. In addition, the opportunities and challenges that recent technologies present to contemporary practitioners and theatre design educators, creating a lot of scope to break with conventions were also highlighted and discussed. The major contribution of this article is in presentation and analysis of two original case studies. The first case study focused on implementing and evaluating novel ways of user-artefact interaction (pioneered in my earlier publications), which benefit learners in developing their research and creativity skills. The second case study investigated the role of the immersive virtual world - Second LifeTM, in effective teaching of scenography, and in creating and experiencing theatrical performances. This article was peer-reviewed and the reviewers’ comments were very favourable including ‘Good article. I was very interested in the material and you presented it in a straightforward manner. Congratulations.’ The article is getting a lot of hits on www.academia.edu and I received a number of reprint requests from international scholars.
