English abstract
This chapter traces the experiences of Bernhard Epassi in Germany between 1896 and 1901. A teenager from Cameroon who initially came to perform in a colonial exhibition, he decided to stay on afterwards to learn a trade. When he tried to push back against the limits imposed on him, he discovered the precarious position of blacks in German society. For colonial subjects legimitation required accomodation with the notions of civilization that ideologically underpinned Germany's colonial effort. Some were able to fit in, but others found it difficult to live a 'normal' life under colonial supervision.
