English abstract

This piece examines the current state of etymological research of the Greek language following the publication of Beekes's new Etymological Dictionary of Greek. I examine in particular the substratum hypothesis vigorously defended by Beekes and demonstrate both that certain phenomena in Greek could be connected to what can plausibly be assumed for the largely unknown Minoan language and, at the same time, that it is not possible to reconstruct the substratum language on the basis of the Greek reflexes, a claim made by Beekes. I also advance a considerable number of suggestions for individual Greek, in particular Mycenaean, etymologies.
