Additional information

The paper reports on a complementary numerical-experimental study of the complex three-dimensional flow over submerged cylinders. The unique experimental data were used to validate the numerical simulations which in turn provided insights into the physics of such flows. The simulations were carried out on a high-performance computer, which allowed the use of a very fine grid resolving and elucidating the fine-scale turbulence structure. This conceptual model developed in this work was used in a recent review article (D. Sumner, Journal of Fluids and Structures, 2013), explaining the details of the "flow above the free end of a finite-height circular cylinder".
