Additional information

This research quantifies the degree of healing achieved when capillary tubes filled with adhesive are embedded in concrete structures, which previous work using this technology had failed to accomplish. The work is significant because it lays the foundation for the delivery, using micro-capsules, of a wide range of autonomic healing agents including bacteria that can both restore and enhance the behaviour of such structures. This paper has led directly to the £1.67M EPSRC project 'Materials for Life' (EP/K026631/1) and the associated collaborative work with Cambridge University and the University of Bath.
