An invited original contribution to mark the 65th Birthday of Prof Rees Rawlings. By applying novel methods of damage assessment to angle-ply and woven systems, this extended the experimental strand of a body of work in which Surrey is recognised as internationally leading: ceramic matrix composites and thermal shock.
