Additional information

Explores the mid-infrared spectral region, wavelengths > 3.7 µm, for the operation of silicon optical waveguides and devices; instead of the 1.55 µm region where the vast majority of research effort in silicon photonics has been focused. There are an enormous range of potential applications including optical sensing, free-space communications, environmental monitoring, biomedical & thermal imaging and infrared counter-measures. In this work we describe the design, fabrication and characterisation of silicon-on-insulator (SOI) based rib & strip waveguides, MMI splitters and racetrack resonators, which were demonstrated as part of the EPSRC £2.1M Silicon Photonics programme grant (EP/F001428/1).
