Additional information

This paper describes two novel highly miniaturised radiation environment and effects monitoring payloads (MuREM and SSTL-RM) which have been designed and built by the University of Surrey for flight on the UK’s TechDemoSat-1 mission to be launched in 2013. The instruments are designed to give comprehensive measurements with minimal impact on the spacecraft resources. The SSTL-RM has been adopted by Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd as a commercial product for incorporation into its spacecraft, to act as a warning system to help mitigate radiation damage from solar particle events and traversals of the trapped radiation belts.
