A simple approximation (Forbes 2006) for a well-known function v in orthodox field electron emission theory. The 2006 approximation is superior to previous approximations of equivalent complexity (about 15). This paper derives mathematically exact series expansion for v, and shows it is closely related to the exact result. The impact of this work will make this approximation a justified result, rather than "yet another" empirical formula. It is respected by the community now as the most important approximation available, as seen by the invited talks presented by the author.
