Additional information

Here the ability to wavelength tune silicon Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) to emit between 1.2-1.4 micron to extend the optical communications band is demonstrated. This work complements our previous work using erbium to provide emission at 1.55 micron. Initial contact made with some major manufacturers who have shown interest in the technology, including Intel (USA and Israel), TSMC (Taiwan), Freescale (USA) and SUN (USA) and photonics companies such as Oclaro (USA), JDS Uniphase (USA), Kotura (USA) and Luxtera (USA).
