Additional information

Paper was motivated by a design exercise for a stiff and massive floor system in a $bn Singapore micro-electronics plant (disguised in Figure 13). This paper nails the deficiencies in the widely used North American design guidance for such structures and suggests numerous technology improvements to the (better but imperfect) UK guidance. Our spinout company now uses these improvements in similar UK and overseas design applications. Full-scale measurements commissioned by the plant operator validated the performance we predicted and client engineer (timothy.d.jolly@seagate.com) was ‘simply amazed that you had predicted these….’. The clear understanding of the problem has informed retrofit strategy.
