Quantification of over-speed risk in wind turbine fleets
This research took a rigorous approach to quantifying the risk of over-speed protection system failure (causing catastrophic wind turbine failure) in modern wind turbines, through the novel application of Markov models to detailed wind turbine models. The research was supported by Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) [£828.3k 2008-2013], and the results yielded a significant change in operation and maintenance practice (including test, inspection, and data analytics) as the industrial project collaborator [Kevin.blundell@sse.com] implemented the findings and initiated follow-on research [£121.7k, 2013-2014, neil.connolly@sse.com; £485.5k, 2013-2014, iain.corrigan@sse.com] on identified single-points-of-failure and FMECA studies.
