This research was awarded the Pascal Rol Award for Best Paper on Ophthalmic Technologies at SPIE BIOS 2011. The photonic operation simplifies implantation and has meant Pixium Vision [COO: Hill, rhill@pixium-vision.com] are commercialising this as the 3rd generation of their implant. In a 2-page "news & views" article [Nature Photonics (6) 2012, 344-345], E. Zrenner, one of the founders of this field, noted that this paper will “undoubtedly have a positive influence on the field”.
