Haptic feedback can provide an objective assessment of arthroscopic skills.
<28> This work uses a novel technique to objectively assess and feedback on performance of orthopaedic surgeons by measuring forces and torques through surgical instruments. Accurate and detailed 6-axis force / torque data was captured from a sensor and time synchronised with a video recording of the procedure. The data was analysed on a range of metrics including: time efficiency, movement economy and consistency. Results showed a correlation between these parameters and the surgeon’s experience, suggesting the method has value for objective scoring and performance assessment. It has the potential to improve the way that surgeons are trained and assessed.
