Additional information

This work is the outcome of collaboration between Plymouth and Zhejiang University in China. Castellated members have long been used as beams, but they have recently also been used as columns. The only available literature on castellated columns dealt with finite element analysis. No analytical study had been done. This paper is the first to develop an analytical solution for calculating the critical buckling load of simply supported castellated columns when they buckle about the major axis. This work has led to studies of the buckling and vibration analyses of castellated beams by Plymouth University and Ningbo University, China.
