This paper resulted from a fruitful co-operation between the two authors with complementary expertise in urban planning and coastal engineering. Barbados has the most extensive coastal planning and engineering works in the whole of the Caribbean region and the paper is based on the authors’ extensive knowledge of the Barbadian coastline and its modifications through planning policies and coastal engineering schemes.
