English abstract

The research considers Stilicho and the emperor Honorius, seen in traditional historiography as good and bad, the former leading the army to victories and the latter unable to defend even Rome. Here it is argued that the prejudice against Honorius is mainly due to the fall of Rome to the Visigoths, whereas he was a capable emperor at his capital in Ravenna. In relation to Britannia, the two Pictish wars of Stilicho are discussed, focusing on the aftermath of his interventions, and concluding with some reflections on the end of Roman rule in Britain.
