IT users can find the demands for repeated re-authentication across numerous devices highly inconvenient to the extent that they compromise the safeguards. Our concept, authentication aura, arose out of work on mobile device security with Orange/France-Telecom (who have supported our related research with £110K+ of funding). Recognising that a user’s various devices may offer distinct authentication mechanisms of different strengths, we propose a new approach that reduces explicit user involvement by sharing authentication information between devices. The resulting ‘aura’ is an adaptive security envelope based upon the intelligent aggregation of the collective inputs.
