Additional information

Limited lifetime of low-temperature fuel cells analysed by cyclic thermammetry (invented by Burstein). Shows that nanoparticulate Pt detaches from the nanoparticulate carbon support by thermal fatigue, an entirely new phenomenon in nanoparticulate materials. Explains losses due to “hot spots” on cathodes and during start-up/shut-down cycles. Formed part of plenary lecture on “Hydrogen and Fuel Cells" (Mexico) 2011. This paper is the first report of an observation that the Pt/C air cathodes degrade as a direct result of dynamic temperature cycling.
