Additional information

<20>Presents an approach to managing interactive reconfiguration of systems on aircraft, following failures, whilst preserving safety. It is a novel application of naturalistic decision-making with time constraints and draws on cognitive psychology in identifying effective means of information presentation. The approach is validated through experiments with aircraft pilots, using eye tracking and interviews to evaluate performance; there is statistically significant evidence to show that the approach improves pilots’ decision accuracy, performance and situation awareness, whilst reducing mental workload and complacency. Reconfiguration is complex and potentially hazardous so the results are significant; they may also be useful in other domains.
