Additional information
Featured on the front cover, this paper reported the first successful attempt to make gold nanoparticles (or any near-spherical nanoparticles) order spontaneously into 3D anisotropic structures, by covering them with laterally attached liquid crystal forming molecules. This paves the way for a bottom-up approach to the fabrication of nano-particle based devices and metamaterials. This led to an EU funded project NANOGOLD (FP7-NMP-2008-SMALL-2) and resulted in the first metamaterial in such systems. It was highlighted in the ESRF annual report, 2009.
