Additional information

Existing knowledge of key product design elements and their relationships (FBS: Function, Behaviour and Structure) is well established (Gero et al). Using detailed protocol analysis throughout a five month project involving two designers, a new critical realist view (CR-FBS) was presented that challenges recognised knowledge in the field. The results are generic and can be applicable to all engineering design domains and provide a foundation to further confront accepted norms. Reviewers stated the paper: “constitutes a valuable contribution to the growing body of research that is developing around the FBS model” (Editor: I.T.Klaasen@tudelft.nl).
