English abstract

On 1 January 2007 Bulgaria and Romania became members of the European Union. Through a longitudinal analysis of the coverage of already existing EU migration and that from the two new member states on the three main UK terrestrial television news programmes over several months during 2006, this essay highlights the contingencies of changing contextual circumstances. It also challenges an understanding of British Euroscepticism in purely foreign policy terms, demonstrating that media discourses in Britain echoed and reinforced a wider debate on migration in the context of domestic politics, ie the disparity between numbers of predicted and actual migrants.
