Additional information
This paper reports the world's first detection of anammox bacteria in groundwater. Anammox are able to oxidize the important water pollutant ammonium in the absence of oxygen and so can significantly reduce the lifetime of groundwater pollution plumes, reducing the need to actively remediate contaminated sites. Their presence has since been confirmed at 3 ammonium-contaminated sites in Canada (DOI: 10.1021/es201243t).
