Additional information

The liver is a highly organised, structured organ that carries out many physiological functions. This paper is the only account of developing and modelling a bioartificial liver that considers the structure and oxygen gradients through the liver sinusoid compartments, i.e. the periportal, pericentral and perivenal zones. Previous reports only considered the average properties across the complete sinusoid, so this an original study that includes realistic liver physiology in the model. The paper arises from our previous work on modelling a bioartifiial liver (Davidson et al, 2011, Biotechnol Bioeng).
