Self-assembly of large and small molecules into hierarchically ordered sacs and membranes.
This paper reports the self-assembly between a macromolecule and a small peptide of opposite charge, that results in the formation of self-sealing sacs and membranes of arbitrary size and shape. This work led to the filling of a patent (US 2008/0199431 A1; WO 2008/121447 A1), news releases (American and Portuguese press), invited talks including keynote lectures, and has significantly influenced the field of dynamic self-assembly. Subsequent publications have emerged based on this seminal work, being also the basis of an ERC Starting Grant (1,492,000€) and a Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology grant (188,726€).
