Additional information

This paper demonstrates the state of the art in using Automatic Differentation (AD) software to derive adjoint solvers which are essential for design optimisation with CFD. It presents a rigorous development and validation strategy. The particular novelty of the paper is the detailed description on how to apply AD to CFD codes written in the modern Fortran 90 language, which is used by a large fraction of industrial CFD codes. The work is a key outcome of the EC FP-7 project FlowHead and led to further EC ITN funding with the About Flow project.
