Additional information

The paper describes the development of a robotic arm devised to simulate front crawl swimming enabling direct measurement of the propulsive moment. A model using in-house wind tunnel data was developed achieving 3% accuracy for the unsteady flow conditions. The model is now applied in software aiding swimming team coaches and was adopted by Austrian and German Olympic teams who won 5 medals in London 2012.The study also led to invited presentations at the Australian Institute of Sport and the 18th Congress European College of Sport Science (3000 participants) and appointment as a biomechanics advisor at the University of California.
