Additional information

This study is the first to show that the structure of primary cilia is regulated by inflammatory cytokines and that this drives the inflammatory process. As such the paper highlights a totally novel role for primary cilia in mediating inflammation in cartilage and a variety of other cell types. Hence these findings open the door to a potential new therapeutic target for drugs aimed at controlling inflammation. The work was widely picked up by the scientific press and formed the preliminary data which led to over £800k grant funding from the MRC, Arthritis Research UK and the AO Foundation.
