Additional information

This is the first study to reveal the function of the primary cilium in articular cartilage and its critical role in mediating mechanotransduction. This study not only shows that primary cilia orchestrate chondrocyte mechanotransduction but identifies a novel primary cilia mechanosensory signalling pathway different to anything previously reported in other cell types. This study was a key output from a 3 year Wellcome Trust grant and led to three funded PhD studentships, an invited workshop presentation at OARSI 2012, an invited book chapter (Mechanically Gated Channels, Springer 2012) and invitation onto the editorial board of the journal Cilia.
