Additional information

The first demonstration of a semiconductor laser monolithically integrated with an active polarization controller is described. This new device allows the output polarization of the device to be varied continuously via electronic control at sub-nanosecond speeds. The research has resulted in the filing of a patent PCT/GB2012/050519 (“Polarization Control Device”), and has stimulated further demonstrations of this technology in the THz band. There is currently significant interest in using it in a wide range of applications such as the light source for 3D displays, bio-sensing and telecommunications.
