Additional information

This paper demonstrates for the first time that it is possible to control in real-time a neuroprosthesis and to stimulate the abdominal muscle in humans, using a brain-computer interface (BCI). The research was undertaken with the University of Bremen as part of the EU-FP6-ToK project BRAINROBOT (PI Prof Gräser, ag@iat.uni-bremen). It contributed to the award of a Carnegie PhD scholarship, which enabled the clinical evaluation of this technology in three spinal cord injured patients (Queen Elizabeth National Spinal Injuries Unit, Glasgow; Mr. D. Allan, Consultant, spinalunit@sgh.scot.nhs.uk).
